Meet the Guides

Richard Jones began devising his London walks and tours in 1979 and began offering guided tours of London in 1982. Since then he has built solid reputation as a genuine innovator on the walking tour scene in London.

Walks have since become a crowded market but Richard has always been at the forefront when it comes to devising popular and creative tours. He was, for example, the first person to devise and offer Beatles London walks. In addition his was the first walking tour company to offer Jack the Ripper Walks every night of the week. It was Richard who first devised and conducted the popular Secret City Walk and his Sunday morning London of Dickens and Shakespeare tour, first offered in 1983, became one of the most popular walks on offer.

It was Richard who first made the Jack the Ripper walk such a popular and regular feature on the London tourism scene – a fact that is about to be acknowledged by one of the most respected sources on the subject – and his methods of advertising and promoting tours set the standard which has been followed by other London walks companies over the last twenty years.

Favourable reviews of Richard’s London walks regularly appear in newspapers all over the world and those who take tours with him frequently write in or email to say how entertaining they found Richard as a guide.

Richard is passionate about London, and his enthusiasm for his subject ensures that those who join him on his walking tours don’t just get a guided tour, they get a genuine experience that is both entertaining and enlightening. Richard leads them through the hidden alleyways and secret courtyards the discovery of which often elicits gasps of genuine amazement from walkers who often confess that they would never have dreamt that these places still existed.

In addition to devising and guiding London walks and tours, Richard is also a published author with over 17  books to his name. His first book was City Walks of London, published in 1989. In 1993 his book Memorable Walks in London was published, and this bestselling title is now in its sixth edition.

In 1997 Richard wrote the first of his popular books on the paranormal with the publication of Walking Haunted London. This was followed in 2001 by the universally acclaimed best seller Haunted Britain and Ireland, a book that was something of a trendsetter in that the first series of the cult television show Most Haunted used this book to source many of their filming locations.

Richard has also written books on Britain and Ireland’s haunted castles, inns, and houses as well as studies of Myths and Legends of Britain and Ireland and Mystical Britain and Ireland. His book Walking Dickensian London was published in 2004 and received favourable reviews in several prominent Dickensian journals.

Richard’s company Discovery Tours and Events Limited is a family run business operated by Richard and his wife Joanne, a former nurse who trained at the world renowned St Bartholomew’s and Great Ormond Street hospitals. Being a small family owned concern Richard and Joanne run the business in a friendly and approachable manner and are only too happy to offer advice in order to make the walks or tours you take with them extra special.

In London Richard and Joanne are assisted by a team of handpicked freelance guides all of whom bring their own unique talents to their tours. They include born and bred East ender Jenny Philips, who studied under the renowned East End historian William J. Fishman; and Colin Oakes, an archaeologist who has been guiding since 1982, and whose knowledge of London’s history and superb delivery skills are both second to none. In addition several top flight blue badge guides conduct tours for the company, and several of them have commented on the degree of professionalism and originality that Joanne and Richard’s approach brings to their tours.

All in all this array of talent and expertise is unrivalled by the larger London walks companies who can have over 75 freelance guides on their books, thus making it difficult for them to maintain the personalised service and customer commitment levels that our clients have come to expect and admire from us. As Richard and Joanne maintain “being that much smaller we have to try that much harder.”
