Sunday’s fashion walk will be guided by the terrific Themis and the angelic Anne Marie so it’s going to be a smasher.

The New Jack the Ripper Historical Resource

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

We’ve been working hard on this.

Our Jack the Ripper Walk is widely acknowledged as being the best in London.  We offer you expert guides, limited numbers and a truly atmospheric route that starts right in the heart of the area where the murders occurred in 1888.  We are also passionate about what we do and devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to ensuring we bring you as much information about the Jack the Ripper mystery and East End History as we can. Indeed, the reason for our silence on the blog of late is that we have been working hard to create a truly in depth resource on the history of Jack the Ripper.

Now you can actually see for yourself that we know what we’re talking about when it comes to Jack the Ripper. Our full Jack the Ripper Resource shows you that we are passionate about the subject and that we share the information BEFORE you have to sign up to join our Jack the Ripper Walk.

We are the only company that does this.  We will give you all the information and then you can decide whether you want to join us and pay, or simply read the information and then go and do your own Jack the Ripper Tour using the information.

Our unique approach means that you can really make a study of the case before you join the walk and then be up to speed on all the facts. This makes for a far more enjoyable tour, as you will then be able to discuss the case with your expert guide.  And the fact that we limit our numbers to a sensible numner of around 34 participants is an added bonus that with us you can enjoy an in depth walk that visits more of the actaul murder sites than any other Jack the Ripper Walk.

Richard is the author of 19 books, four of which are about haunted London. So when you join Richard on a ghost tour you’re not joining a ghost walks guide who has just read a few stories in a book, but rather you are joining the man who wrote the book. Locating the source as it were.

Take A Walk Around London This Sunday

Friday, May 21st, 2010

A great, and relatively unexplored part of London, is located beyond the Tower of London. Wapping and Shadwell is where the docks were, but it is also an area that is packed with history and fascination. This Sunday top rate Blue Badge Guide Mark King will be leading a walk through the area. The weather’s going to be great, the subject will keep you intrigued and entertained throughout - so why not spend a Sunday doing something truly worthwhile?

Here is Mark’s write up on his walk.

The Walk takes place at 11am and meets outside Tower Gateway DLR. It costs £10 and lasts around two hours.

You can contact Mark at:

Join me on the next event in my Spring programme of guided walks and visits. I’ll be peeling back layers of history in one of London’s most transformed districts - the former docks in Wapping and Shadwell.

Once part of the world’s busiest port, this section of Docklands has been given a new lease of life since Secretary of State Michael Heseltine and the LDDC began re-development under the last Conservative administration. This introduction to Docklands fits the mood of these exciting times - an alliance designed to appeal across the political spectrum:

* for the conservative-minded, see how splendid warehouses and riverside houses have been put to good use again in recent years
* for the liberal-minded, there’ll be tales of saucy sailors, shady ladies, thieving and skull-duggery
* for those interested in labour, feel the gruelling life of dock-workers and their families, and the dubious hiring practices of the Royal Navy’s infamous press-gangs
* for the green-minded, there’ll be plenty about the River Thames, our city’s great natural highway
* and for those in favour of any party, we’ll end up at one of London’s finest river-side pub-restaurants. RSVP in advance, please!

Route: start outside Tower Gateway DLR station (nearest Tube station is Tower Hill on the Circle and District lines) via St Katherine Dock, Wapping High St. and Wapping Wall.

Optional extra: I’ll be pre-booking tables for Sunday lunch at a glorious pub-restaurant offering riverside views, fine grub, grog and other liquid refreshment.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW MANY PLACES YOU’D LIKE. Sunday roast and other menu choices available.

The tour itself lasts around 2 hours and takes place nightly at 7pm. To book a Jack the Ripper Tour you just have to visit our dedicated page and away you go.

In the meantime you can watch several of our guides in the introduction to our acclaimed DVD ‘Unmasking Jack The Ripper.’

It’s Haunted Britain Again - Harry Potter London

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Tomorrow Richard takes a brief break from his haunted London walks and sets of to snap photographs for his new upcoming book Haunted Britain.

With the text now in the final copy editing stage and the Forward, which was written by Tom Baker (who called it “the book I’ve been waiting for all mu life”) the hard part is no over and it just remains to get some extra photos.

We had a lovely comment about our free Harry Potter Tour yesterday. Two ladies from Texas emailed to say how much they had enjoyed following the route and that it had introduced them to parts of London they were really pleased to have discovered.

Our free London walks will start rolling out this month and we’ve got some great ones for you.

In the mean time, if you would like a copy of the Harry Potter London walk, then please just send an email to harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com and the pdf will then come flying back to you.

You then just print it off and away you go.

Whilst he is away Richard will also be resuming his blog on Haunted Britain which you can follow at the Haunted Britain Blog.

Hopefully there will  be some great photos to go up so keep watching this spot and also check back later this month when the next of our free London walks will go live.

On another note Mark Ubsdell is currently doing the final edit on the Sherlock Holmes documentary he and Richard have been working on throughout the winter. It was recently showcased at MIP and generated a lot of interest amongst TV companies throughout the world. So in closing why not have a watch of the trailer for The Man Who Murdered Sherlock Holmes. Hope you enjoy it.

A Giant of a London walk

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Richard recently appeared in the  programme “Giants Friend or Foe?” which featured the legend of how Stonehenge came into being. It also had Richard standing high up alongside one of the legendary giants, Gog and Magog, in the Guildhall in London.

Walks that include Guildhall are The Secret City Walking Tour and The Dickens London walk.

In addition to Stonehenge and Guildhall, the programme also paid a visit to Cerne Abbas to take a look at its magnificent specimen of a giant carved into a hillside.

Did you know that legend holds that Stonehenge was transported to its current location by the wizard Merlin. Or that childless couples have been known to consummate their relationship on the the Cerne Abbas giants most prominent feature?

These are the sort of snippets that you can learn on our London walking tours.

Giants On Our Walks Of London

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

The secret City London walk that we offer takes in Guildhall, London’s medieval Palace which was built between 1411 and 1440.

Inside are two statues of Gog and Magog, two ferocious giants who belong to the distant, myth filled past of this great City.

In 2003 Richard took part in the History Channel’s “special “Giants Friend or Foe?” For the programme he travelled to Cornwall to talk about Jack the Giant Killer.

But he also filmed inside Guildhall and was, in fact, afforded the rare opportunity of standing alongside the giants, attached to them by a safety harness!

Now, whenever, he leads a London Walking Tour into Guildhall he cannot only tell the story of the two giants, but also he can explain what it’s like to be standing right next to them on their lofty perch.

Whereas we can’t guarantee to get you so up close and personal to these giants when you join our Secret City or Dickens London walks, we can at least give you a unique insight into them.

The Norman Conquest - William The Conqueror

Friday, April 30th, 2010

One of the buildings that well and truly dominates our London Walking Tours is the Tower of London.  This was built by William the Conqueror in the wake of his Norman invasion of 1066.

In 2005 Richard Jones took part in the History Channel’s “The Conquerors” in which programme he spoke extensively on the preparation for, the execution of, and the aftermath of William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in October 1066.

The programme was presented by Captain Dale Dye, formerly of the US Marines, and takes a fast paced look at the Norman Conquest and its consequences.

Richard was reminded of this programme when he recently flew to Toulouse to give a lecture on the Jack the Ripper mystery to a group of students from the International School. The history teacher mentioned that he finds this particular documentary extremely useful in teaching students about the Norman invasion as it is a very visual piece.
