Harry Potter London walks - They’re Free!

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Tomorrow, Sunday, why not enjoy a day exploring London on one of our free London walks.

Our Harry Potter Tour of London will take you on a magical journey all over London.

You’ll see many of the places that were used in the Harry Potter films, you’ll enjoy a wonderfully relaxing walk around London, and you’ll also be able to keep the kids occupied by our London Treasure Hunt that is incorporated into the Harry Potter London walks.

Getting hold of your free copy of the walk couldn’t be easier as the whole process is automated. Simply ping a quick email to

harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com

and, as if by magic, within around 40 seconds are wizards and goblins will spring into action, wave their wands and, lo and behold, the Harry Potter Tour pdf will arrive in your mail box.

The pdf is a 30 page booklet which you then print out and then you head off into central London and simply follow the step by step instructions.

We last checked the route on 8th September so its very up to date and it even features the locations from the latest film Harry Potter and the half Blood Prince.

We’ve had a great deal of interest shown in the Harry Potter London Tour since we launched it in May and many people who have taken it have emailed to say what a great time they had and thanking us for  putting this free resource out there.

We can only send it via the automated system as it takes us rather a long time to up load and send the PDF manually (three minutes to be precise).

So please don’t request the PDF via our contact form as we won’t be able to send it. Simply email us at harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com and you’ll get the whole tour as a PDF by return.

We are currently compiling a few more London walks that can be sent by PDF for you to do at your own pace so be sure to return in a few weeks to see what else we have to offer.

Beatles Walks London

Monday, September 7th, 2009

In 1988 Richard Jones became the first guide to offer Beatles London walks. The tour that Richard devised started at Green Park and took in the sites associated with the fab four around the West End of London.

Today, London walks around the Beatles site are an integral part of the tourist scene. But when Richard started his Beatles Tour it really was an original, so much so that the Sunday Times Magazine did a feature on it and, a much younger looking, Richard graced the cover of that issue showing a group on his London Walking Tour the Beatles former headquarters in Saville Row.

Richard’s Beatles London walk is about to get our free London walks treatment and will soon be available as a requestable PDF that you will be able to download and do at your own pace and in your own time.

Featured on the Beatles Walk of London will be the house where John Lennon and Yoko Ono posed for their notorious nude photo shoot that graced the cover of their Two Virgins album.

The flat was situated at 34 Montagu Square close to Marylebone and Baker Street Underground Stations.

This address has been in the news recently as an application has been lodged with the local council for a blue plaque commemorating John Lennon’s residence at the flat to be placed on the exterior wall of the building.

This will be just one of the stops on the Beatles London Tour which will be one of a series of Free London walks that you will be able to download in the coming months.

Our Harry Potter London Walking Tour is still doing a roaring trade and is due for an update in the next week or two ( we last updated it at the end of July to include the scenes from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince).

Meanwhile our London Ghost Walk is back after its annual “rest” in August. So things are getting back to normal and soon we will be offerring you an even wider choice of free and paid London walks. Watch this space!

The Harry Potter London walk returns.

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Yes it’s back!

We’ve had a little break from our Walking tours of London, to recharge the batteries and get rested for another year of showing you the best that London has to offer.

But we’re back now, refreshed and raring to go and one of the first things we are ready to do is re-instate our Harry Potter London walk.

For those of you who are not familiar with this, it has in recent months become one of the Capital’s most popular free London walk (The London Paper did a feature on it in August and many people have requested their copy).

It was devised and put together by Richard Jones and it far more than just a bog standard London walk. It is a step by step guide around the Harry Potter film locations in London.

But it is also a guide to some of London’s most fascinating and historic places.

In addition it is structured as a treasure hunt so that the kids will be kept occupied throughout the entire Harry Potter Walking Tour of London.

It is sent to you as an attachment and downloads as a 30 page PDF that is very detailed and which gives you step by step directions to enable you to visit almost all the Harry Potter film locations in London.

It has been fully updated top include the locations used in the new film Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

So if you would like a copy of this free London walk then please send an email request to

harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com

and your copy of the PDF will soon be owling its way towards you almost immediately. Now that’s magic!

Harry Potter Walk - London

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

We’re about to make the necessary amendments to our Harry Potter London walks and treasure hunt to take in the locations used in the new film Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

To be honest London doesn’t feature that much in the film, apart from a thrilling sequence at the beginning which is guaranteed to send a shiver down the spine of anyone who decides to take a stroll over the Millennium Bridge!

The film begins with a wonderful ariel view over London and at first it is the City that those who have joined us on our London walks will instantly recognise.

But all is not well in the world of the Muggles. No sooner do you recognise familiar landmarks than dark shadows come shooting down from the sky. They are the Death Eaters en route to wreak havoc on Muggles London.

Walks that feature the locations that are used in this first scene are plentiful. Suffice it to say that there is a wonderful view of Trafalgar Square, after which the Death Eaters race past the Church of St, Martin in the Fields, past Leicester Square Underground Station and onwards and upwards.

The next scene shows a long view of St Paul’s Cathedral looking over the Millennium Bridge. The shadows come up from behind the dome and then swoop down onto the bridge itself causing it to twist and buckle before it breaks up and falls into the River Thames. It really is an exciting sequence.

The last view shows the Death Eaters flying over  Tate Modern, which looks particularly good in the scene.

Thereafter the rest of the film takes place way out of London as Harry and his friends do battle with all manner of enemies both within and without Hogwarts.

You can get your free PDF of our Harry Potter London walks by emailing us at harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com and we’ll respond within five minutes attaching a copy of our 28 page PDF booklet of the Harry Potter London walks.

Whilst we’re on the subject of our Harry Potter London walk, one of the people who did the tour at the end of June got a really nice surprise as they were following the route. We’ll tell you what it was in Friday’s Blog.

Walks in London - Harry Potter

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Our Harry Potter London walks are about to be updated to incorporate the locations used in the new film Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Richard and his two boy wizards, Thomas and William, went to see the film on Sunday and noted the London locations that are featured in the film.

Today, Monday July 20th 2009, Richard will be walking the Harry Potter London walks route and making the necessary amendments to include the locations that were featured in the new film.

As mentioned in an earlier blog one notable London scene will feature the Death Eaters leading an attack in London that causes the Millennium Bridge to wobble an awful lot!

So one certain amendment to the Harry Potter Walking Tour of London will be a slight detour from the route along the south bank of the River Thames onto the Millennium Bridge where you will be able to picture the scene as it buckles under the attack from the Death Eaters.

Trafalgar Square and the Gherkin also feature in the film so they will also be featured in the coming update of the Harry Potter London walk.

If you haven’t yet requested our free Harry Potter London walks PDF then you can do so by simply sending us an email request to

harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com

and you’ll get it almost immediately.

The PDF is a 28 page booklet that we send to you as an email attachment and you then download, print off and follow its step by step instructions around the streets of London. It also incorporates a treasure hunt through London to keep the kids occupied between locations.

It is a detailed document complete with photographs of the locations visited. In addition you get a lot of the history of the different parts of London that the Walking Tour of Harry Potter film locations passes through.

So, for example, you cross London Bridge and find out why it was/ is falling down. You go inside the church that features in the ryme Oranges and Lemons and discover the meaning behind the rhyme.

The best part though is that our tour is one of our Free London walks that will only cost the paper and ink to print it off and your travel expenses to the start point.

Richard Jones wrote the tour because he wanted to show parents that they really could enjoy a family day out in London and not end up spending lots of money. In a nutshell that’s exactly what Richard’s free London walks do. They show you that you can, if you wish, spend a day, few days, or even a week in London enjoying some great attractions all of which are free.

So don’t delay. send us an email to harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com and we will send you the free Harry Potter London walks PDF within about 5 minutes. Magic or what?

Coming Soon - Harry Potter London walk update

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Not long to go now before the new Harry Potter film Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince makes its appearance, and our London walks around the Harry Potter film sites will, of course, be updated accordingly.

What we can report is that two of the locations that we include on our Harry Potter London walk will feature in extremely dramatic fashion in what is destined to be this summer’s blockbuster movie.

The Death Eaters will be launching an attack on London in the upcoming film and the locations singled out for this will be Trafalgar Square and (gasps of utter horror!) the Millennium Bridge.

Since it is on the Warner Bros trailer it’s not giving too much away to say that the Millennium Bridge might have  wobbled a great deal when it first opened, but it wobbles a whole lot more in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince when the Death Eaters come a calling!

The film Premiers on 15th July 2009 and I’ve had the chance to see it I will update the London walks PDF of the Harry Potter film sites.

Until then you can get a taster of just how dramatic the Death Eaters attack on London is going to be by dropping by the Warner Bros Harry Potter website.

But be warned. It might make you a tad nervous about crossing the Millennium Bridge!

In the meantime you can still receive your free copy of the Harry Potter Tour PDF by filling in the request form at the top right of the page.

We will then send you our exciting 27 page step by step guide that takes you to all the Harry Potter film locations in London and gives you a fun few days out in the capital.

It’s also structured like a treasure hunt so that you can keep the kids amused looking for things around the streets of London as you see the Harry Potter film locations and some of London’s major tourist attractions.

So please do take advantage of our free tour via PDF and stay tuned to this site for some of the new free London walks we will soon be offering.
