Walking London With Kids

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

On Saturday an intriguing question was raised by a couple who joined Richard on one of his London walks through the haunted City. They wanted to know what they could do in London, that wouldn’t cost a fortune, with their, children.

This was exactly why Richard wrote his  Harry Potter London walk and treasure hunt last year (still available by sending an email to harry-potter-pdf@discovery-walks.com).

But discussing the things that families can do in London  that aren’t going to cost an arm and a leg Richard came up with a list of  suggestions.

The Bank of England Museum, located a short walk from Bank Underground Station is a great start. Not only can you get to lift a solid gold bar (great fun in its own right) but for children the Bank Museum also provides a quiz sheet of bits of information that they must seek out as they go round.

The Guildhall Art Gallery is another suggestion.  Although they charge and entrance fee, it isn’t that much and they also provide a quiz sheet to keep the kids occupied.

Next door is Guildhall itself, built between 1411 and 1440 and London’s medieval palace. You can get the children looking for the two fierce giants that guard it.

A little walk away is the wonderful Museum of London, which tells the fascinating story of this great city from pre-Roman times to the present day. Again they provide a great quiz sheet for the kids, admission is free and you can lose yoursefl for a good half day inside.

So, within a short walk of each other you have a whole days entertainment in London that will keep the kids occupied and, if you include Guildhall Art Gallery will cost under £10! Can’t be bad eh?

London Freebies - Walks Etc.

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

London has a reputation for being an expensive City and, whereas this is true if you stick to the well-trodden and often crowded main attractions, there is so much that is free in London.

Walks, for example, make a great and cheap way of getting around. Not only do you save on the tube, bus or taxi fare, but you also get to see so much more of what is a truly fascinating and wonderful City.

Many of London’s museums are totally free to visit and yet you could easily lose yourself for a day inside them. The British Museum, The Natural History Museum and the Victoria an Albert Museum all offer immense and fascinating collections for you to experience and explore.

Smaller museums include the Sir John Soane Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields which is a time-capsule showing a collectors house from the first half of the 19th century. The Soane Museum isn’t a museum as such but is left exactly how the architect John Soane  lived in it and is an absolute joy to discover.

Across the fields from Sir John Soane’s House is the Royal College of Surgeons Building, covered on our Medical London walks and which has a first floor museum dedicated to the history of surgery. Again this is free of charge and the collection is fascinating, although perhaps a little gruesome.

You can see the skeleton of the infamous Jonathan Wilde. You can view Winston Churchill’s dentures and half of the brain of Charles Babbage, the 18th century computing pioneer. The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Another museum not to be missed is one that we have featured on our Historic City of London walks. The Museum of London tells the story of this great city and is a fantastic place. It can keep you occupied for the best part of the day and doesn’t cost a penny to go inside.

So you see. London can be expensive. But it can also offer exceedingly good value for money, and if you use our free London walks routes on our sister site www.walksoflondon.co.uk to plan your own explorations of London you really can get so much out of this city that well and truly has something to suit all tastes and budgets.
